Frequently asked questions.
Everything you need to know about ARAs compatibility, performance, hardware requirements, and features.
How is ARAs different from BlueStacks?Differences
The main difference is the experience. ARAs is an experimental Android research environment built specifically for Apple silicon, with no heavy emulator dashboard or x86 translation. Android opens in a clean, resizable Mac window. It is not focused only on games: ARAs also supports everyday and social apps that use features such as the camera, microphone, speakers, and video calls.
How is ARAs different from the Android Studio emulator?Differences
Android Studio's emulator is primarily a development and debugging tool. ARAs is designed more like iPhone Mirroring for Android, with native trackpad gestures, keyboard and mouse input, Retina scaling, rotation, clipboard support, drag-and-drop installation, camera, microphone, notifications, and background idle mode.
Is ARAs only designed for games?General
No. Games are useful for testing graphics and input performance, but ARAs is also designed for social apps, communication, productivity, research, and everyday Android use on a Mac.
What Android apps work with ARAs?Compatibility
ARAs is designed for up to 98% app compatibility. It runs ARM64 Android apps that do not depend on unsupported device-specific hardware or incompatible native components. Compatibility can still vary by app and version.
Does ARAs support Google Play?Compatibility
Yes. Google Play is supported, so you can access and install compatible Android apps and games.
Can ARAs use my Mac camera and microphone?Hardware & Audio
Yes. Supported Android apps can access your Mac camera, microphone, and speakers when you grant permission.
Can I make calls through Android apps on Mac?Hardware & Audio
Yes. Communication apps can use your Mac camera, microphone, and speakers for voice and video calls.
Can I play Android games with my Mac keyboard?Input & Gaming
Yes. Games with built-in keyboard support can use your Mac keyboard natively.
What about touch-only games?Input & Gaming
You can currently use a key-mapping app to bind touch controls to keys. Built-in native key mapping is planned for a future ARAs release.
Which Macs support ARAs?Requirements
ARAs supports Apple silicon Macs with an M-series chip running macOS 14 or later.
What happens when ARAs is idle?Performance
Idle mode typically uses around 2.1% to 4.6% CPU depending on background activity. Notifications continue to arrive, and active downloads or other heavy tasks inside Android can keep running.
When will ARAs be available?Availability
The release date is TBA. Availability updates and announcements will be shared first in the ARAs community server.
